Your Complete Guide to Outdoor Living Pricing from Urban Outdoor Solutions

Building a custom pool and transforming your backyard is one of the most exciting investments you can make in your home. But let’s be honest: pricing in the pool and landscape industry can feel incredibly confusing. Quotes vary wildly, and it’s hard to know what you’re actually getting for your money.

At Urban Outdoor Solutions, we believe you deserve complete transparency. This guide is designed to answer every pricing question you might have, from what drives costs up or down, to how we compare to other builders, to whether a pool is truly a good financial investment. By the time you finish reading, you’ll have the knowledge to make a confident, informed decision for your family.

Where Do I Even Start With Budget?

Every service we offer has a starting investment listed on its individual service page, so that is always a good first stop if you want a ballpark for a specific type of project. But the most useful thing you can do right now is use the calculator below to build out your own estimate based on your actual vision.
It accounts for pool size, depth, decking, features, and add-ons, and it will give you a realistic range before we ever meet. When you are ready to get an accurate number, a design consultation is the next step and we will walk through everything together.

Build Your Own Pool Cost Estimate

What Factors Drive the Price Up in a Pool and Backyard Build?

Understanding what increases the cost of a custom pool and landscape project is the first step toward building a realistic budget. Several key variables can significantly affect your final investment.

The Size of Your Pool

The overall size of your pool is one of the biggest cost drivers. A pool with an 80-foot perimeter will naturally cost less than a 120-foot perimeter pool because it requires fewer materials across the board: less shotcrete, less plumbing, less decking. The good news is that the pricing progression is fairly predictable as you scale up in size, so there are no big surprises. It really does come down to how much of everything are you building.

Pool Depth

Most of our pools are built up to 5 feet deep, which is perfect for entertaining, playing volleyball, and hanging out on a Baja shelf. If you want to go deeper, say 7 to 9 feet, it requires more excavation, additional rebar engineering, and more shotcrete, which adds to the cost. Anything over 6 feet deep starts to require upgraded rebar specifications. Most families today are actually choosing shallower pools because they want a space for entertaining, not for treading water.

Decking Material

We almost never recommend standard concrete in Arizona because our expansive soil causes it to crack and heave over time. It is much easier to replace 10 square feet of settled travertine than to rip out a cracked concrete slab. Within paver-style decking, here is how the options stack up:
Decking TypeCost LevelNotes
Concrete PaversMost affordableCan get very hot in summer sun
Travertine / Natural StoneMid-rangeStays cooler; seal if you have a salt pool
PorcelainPremiumMore labor-intensive installation; beautiful result

Luxury Features and Add-Ons

Features add elegance and fun, but they also add to the budget. Here are some of the most common ones and how they affect cost:
Water Features
A simple plastic sheer descent is cost-effective. Upgrading to a custom metal sheer descent can cost two to three times as much for that single feature alone. Keep in mind that custom metal shears also have a six-week lead time, so decisions need to be made early in the process.
Adding a light inside a bubbler on a Baja shelf can add $800 to $1,000 per bubbler once you factor in markup. We also recommend using multiple smaller lights distributed throughout the pool rather than one large light. It eliminates shadows and lights up the space much better. This adds a little upfront but makes a big difference in how the pool looks at night.
A standard vacuum system is the most cost-effective option and honestly the most effective way to keep a pool clean. An in-floor cleaning system is much more aesthetically pleasing (no hose floating around), but it can cost three to five times as much as a vacuum. We also offer a hybrid approach: pop-up jets on the steps and benches with a vacuum for the main pool area, which gives you the best of both worlds at a more manageable price.
Adding a salt cell for sanitation means adding two additional pieces of equipment, which increases the initial cost compared to a standard chlorine setup.
Baja shelves and step benches are actually relatively inexpensive in the context of a full backyard build. We are talking a few hundred to maybe a thousand dollars for the concrete work. A spa is a more significant addition and will be priced accordingly based on size and features.

Equipment Location and Yard Access

The logistics of your specific yard matter more than most people realize. If we can fit a standard-size excavator into your backyard, excavation costs are lower. If your access is tight and we have to use a smaller machine, it adds time and cost. Additionally, the distance from your pool to the equipment pad, and how far your equipment is from your gas and electric mains, will affect the cost of running plumbing and utility lines.

What Factors Drive the Price Down?

If you love a design but need to tighten the budget, there are realistic ways to bring the cost down without sacrificing the overall vision.

Phasing the Project

If you plan to stay in your home long-term, phasing is a smart approach. We can build the pool now and run the necessary gas and electric lines underground so they are ready for a future outdoor kitchen or fire feature. This gets you swimming sooner while spreading out the financial investment. The key is planning it right from the start so you are not tearing things up later.

Simplifying the Scope

Often, the most effective way to reduce costs is to eliminate certain elements rather than downgrading materials. For example, instead of a built-in fire pit that takes up space and budget, a beautiful portable fire table gives you the same ambiance with more flexibility for seating when you have a large group over. Removing a spa, scaling back the size of a covered patio, or simplifying a water feature can make a meaningful difference.

Being Realistic About Material Swaps

Many people assume that switching from travertine to concrete pavers will save them a huge amount of money. In reality, on a 500-square-foot deck, the material difference might only be around $2,500. If you are trying to reduce a $140,000 project down to $100,000, swapping materials alone won’t get you there. We have to look at the overall size and scope of the build. That said, material swaps can still be worth making because every dollar counts.

Why Are Some Pool Builders So Expensive And Others So Cheap?

It is common to get three quotes for a pool and see a massive difference in price. If you receive a quote for $50,000 and another for $100,000, you are almost certainly not comparing apples to apples. Here is why some companies are cheaper:

Volume Over Craft

Many budget builders focus on volume. They want to get in, build a standard rectangular pool, and move on to the next house. They may not spend the time to ask how your family actually plans to use the space, how you entertain, or how the traffic will flow from the house to the pool to the kitchen. The result is a pool that looks fine in photos but doesn’t actually fit how you live.

Material and Engineering Choices

Some builders use lower-grade materials or the bare minimum engineering standards to save money. For example, they might use a simpler engineering plan that requires less rebar, or skip putting a proper aggregate base under travertine decking. At Urban Outdoor Solutions, we engineer our pools and use premium construction methods because we want you and us to sleep well at night knowing your pool is built to last.

Where Do Urban Outdoor Solutions' Prices Fall?

We are not the cheapest pool builder in the East Valley, and we are proud of that. We are also not the most expensive. We know there are volume builders who will quote a lower initial price, often by using lower-grade materials or providing a less comprehensive service.

Our pricing is built on a foundation of engineering integrity and transparency. We provide incredibly detailed, 10-page proposals broken down by square footage and line item, not a one-page lump sum. We do this so you know exactly where every dollar is going.

Our goal is always to provide a price that is competitive and fair for the level of craftsmanship, design expertise, and project management we deliver. We refuse to build pools that will crack or fail in five years. We want to be proud of every project we complete, and we want you to love your backyard for decades. We don’t play the price comparison game. If someone shows us a quote that is dramatically lower than ours, we won’t try to match it or tear it apart. We will simply make sure you understand exactly what you are getting with us, and let you make the decision that is right for your family.

A Note On Historical Pricing Trends

If you built a pool before 2020, the prices you remember are no longer accurate. The COVID-19 pandemic caused significant disruptions to the construction supply chain, and material prices, particularly for concrete, PVC, and pool equipment, increased dramatically.

As a general benchmark, a pool that cost $50,000 before 2020 would cost significantly more today, driven by inflation, supply chain factors, and increased labor costs. We share this not to alarm you, but to set accurate expectations as you begin your planning process. The cost of building a pool has shifted, but the value it brings to your home and lifestyle remains as strong as ever.

Are There Any Hidden Costs I Should Know About?

We pride ourselves on providing comprehensive, detailed proposals so there are no surprises. That said, there is one utility-related cost that occasionally catches homeowners off guard:

Gas Meter Upgrades

If you are adding a gas heater for a pool or spa, your gas company may require a meter upgrade. Southwest Gas typically does this at no charge. Mesa Gas, however, currently charges around $1,200 for a meter upgrade. This is a fee paid directly to the utility company, not to us, and it is something we always flag early in the process so it never comes as a surprise.

A Quick Note on Excavation

Most pool excavations are straightforward, but every property is a little different. In some cases, the ground may require additional excavation time due to soil conditions, underground material, or access limitations.

When we review your property, we will look for anything that may affect the excavation process and talk through it with you ahead of time whenever possible. Our goal is simply to make sure you understand what can influence the process before work begins.

If additional excavation work is needed, we will communicate clearly, explain what we are seeing, and walk you through the next steps. For most homeowners, this is not something to worry about upfront. It is just one of the site-specific factors we pay attention to so your project can be planned and managed the right way.

Is a Pool a Good Investment?

A custom pool and backyard is one of the most meaningful upgrades you can make to your home and the way you enjoy it. In places like the East Valley, where outdoor living is part of everyday life for most of the year, a well-designed backyard becomes a natural extension of the home. It creates a place to relax, entertain, cool off, and spend more time outside.

While pools can add value to a home, the real value is in how the space improves everyday life. It gives you a reason to enjoy more weekends at home, host friends and family with ease, and create a backyard that feels comfortable, beautiful, and built around the way you want to live.

Ongoing Maintenance Costs to Budget For

When planning for a pool, it is important to factor in the ongoing costs of ownership:
ExpenseEstimated Cost
Pool service (weekly)$150 to $160/month
DIY chemicalsA few hundred dollars per year
Salt cell replacementEvery 3 to 5 years
Pool light replacementEvery 3 to 7 years depending on use
Pump and filterLong lifespan with proper water chemistry
Gas for spa or heaterVariable; can be significant if left running

A note on water chemistry:

This is the single most important thing you can do to protect your investment. Keeping your calcium levels, CYA, and pH in the right ranges will dramatically extend the life of your equipment, your plaster, and your plumbing. We have seen pools go through three filters in 10 years simply because the calcium levels were never managed. A good pool service company or a commitment to learning the chemistry yourself will save you thousands over the life of your pool.

A note on electricity:

Modern variable-speed pumps are incredibly energy-efficient. You can run your cleaner at high speed for a couple of hours and then let it circulate at a low speed for the rest of the day at almost no cost. You will barely notice the pool on your electric bill. Gas, however, is a different story, especially if you have a spa. If you forget to turn off your spa and leave it heated for a week, you will notice it on your gas bill.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate are your estimates?
Our starting price estimates and calculator results are based on historical data from similar projects we have completed in the East Valley. While every project is unique, these estimates provide a realistic baseline. A detailed, accurate, and comprehensive proposal will be provided after your design consultation and site visit.
Currently, we provide our 3D design as part of the consultation process. This is something we are evaluating as our business grows, but for now, it is included.
Yes. We handle all permitting on our end. The one thing we ask you to handle is your HOA submission. We will provide you with all the documentation and plans, but HOAs typically want to hear directly from the homeowner.
Our honest answer: Go with them if you feel confident they match our scope and quality. We’re not here to pressure you. That said, experience shows that in this industry you typically get what you pay for, though it often becomes clear only when equipment problems start appearing a few years later.
